North Americans, the instrumental guitar project helmed by Patrick McDermott, has a new album on the way. It’s called Going Steady and it’ll be out in September. We’ve already heard the LP’s title track , which features Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) and Julianna Barwick. Dylan Baldi of Cloud Nothing contributed some guitar work to North Americans’ latest single. “Alice Lake” is a short song made to soundtrack a moment of reprieve. This past weekend both Chris Lake and Deadmau5 took the stage at Das Energi Festival outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. I was watching Chris Lake’s Instagram story when I saw him re-post a fan’s video of his set. The caption reminded me of a story that I forgot over the years. Last week in the chaos of new music Friday, many individuals (us included!) missed a brand new Martin Garrix tune. The track which is a collaboration with CMC$ and features Icona Pop fly under the radar as Marty used his GRX alias for featured credits. Why Martin decided to use this moniker instead of his more recognizable name is unknown. Though it seems reasonable to assume that Garrix did not want to steal focus off of CMC$ who released the single off of Martin’s STMPD imprint. ‘X’s’ is a happy little future gem. Icona Pop on the vocals helps pull this tune together perfectly. It is relaxed, happy and infectious as all get out. In the new movie Juliet, Naked , a romantic comedy adapted from a Nick Hornby novel, Ethan Hawke plays Tucker Crowe, a reclusive and unheralded songwriter who suddenly returns to the world. Rose Byrne is the woman he falls in love with, and Chris O’Dowd is her Tucker Crowe-obsessed ex. It’s supposed to be pretty good! And one of the good things about it is the music. Tucker Crowe has to have songs, of course, and the Juliet, Naked soundtrack features Ethan Hawke singing original songs written by people like Ryan Adams, Conor Oberst, M. Ward, and Robyn Hitchcock — all smart choices for the character that Hawke plays. We’ve already posted Hawke’s version of Oberst’s song “LAX,” as well as Oberst’s haunted voice-and-piano demo for the song. And now the whole soundtrack, featuring both the artists’ demos and Hawke’s versions of those songs, is out. So that means we get new songs from Adams and Ward and Hitchcock, and we also get to hear one of his generation’s greatest actors singing...

The new movie Mile 22 is the latest cinematic team-up between Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg, who just got done making three different movies about true-story tragedies in recent American history. This time around, they’ve gone with a fictional story about American special-forces types trying to get an informant out of a Southeast Asian country. The informant is played by Indonesia’s Iko Uwais, maybe the world’s greatest martial-arts movie star, and it’s his biggest American look yet. (I would sincerely recommend that, right this second, you stop whatever you’re doing and watch Uwais in Headshot , Merantau , and especially The Raid: Redemption and its sequel if you haven’t already.)
