Talib Kweli Says He Appreciates Trap And Mumble Rappers Because They “Are Able To Create A Vibe”

Hình ảnh
“As a lyricist, me as someone who had to learn how to rhyme to the beat, I appreciate just hearing trap rappers and mumble rappers.” – Talib Kweli Talib Kweli recently sat down with HipHopDX as part of their recurring video segment “Soulful Sundays.” Alongside DX’s Editor-In-Chief Trent Clark , Kweli talked about lyricism in rap music, as well as his appreciation for trap and mumble rappers. READ: Yasiin Bey And Talib Kweli Discuss What Hip-Hop Means To Them In New Interview “I appreciate people like Travis Scott and Future and Migos who are not as lyrical but are able to create a vibe,” the rapper said. “The reason why I can appreciate it is because they can’t do what I do. They’ll never be as good as me as doing what I do because I got that on lock. So, since it’s like I got that on lock, well how can I be a better musician? Being a better musician is creating a vibe and the way that people respond, and the way that people respond to these artists is because they’re creating a...

Watch Blood Orange Debut “Chewing Gum” With A$AP Rocky & Project Pat On Kimmel

A week from today, Blood Orange’s new album Negro Swan will go out into the world, and thus far, Dev Hynes has shared videos for the songs “ Charcoal Baby ” and “ Jewelry .” The album comes with a bunch of prominent guests, and two of those guests joined Hynes on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to debut “Chewing Gum,” another of the album’s songs. “Chewing Gum” turns out to be a shimmery, ethereal synth-soul track with a very serious bottom end and contributions from two very different rappers. The most famous guest on the entire album — probably the most famous person who has ever showed up on a Blood Orange album — is A$AP Rocky, who drops in with a characteristically casual and flossy rap verse. And on the song’s outro, things get woozy and screwed-up, and Project Pat — the brother of Juicy J, auxiliary Three 6 Mafia member, and general all-around Memphis rap legend — adds a few words. Debuting the song on Kimmel last night, Hynes stood behind a bank of electronics, singing air...

Death Cab For Cutie Perform “Gold Rush”: Watch

Hình ảnh
Death Cab For Cutie’s new album, Thank You For Today , is out today. Its release coincides with the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Something About Airplanes , which we looked back on to honor the occasion. The band went on The Late Late Show With James Corden yesterday to perform the album’s very first single, “ Gold Rush .” The band already has one late-night show performance under their belt for this album cycle — earlier this week they appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s big outdoor stage to put on a mini-concert of sorts — and they’re old pros at it at this point, so Ben Gibbard and co. put on a steady and assured performance. Watch below. Kanye West & Kid Cudi Perform “Ghost Town” At Surprise Show

Hình ảnh
Earlier this year, old collaborators Kanye West and Kid Cudi formed a new group, a duo called Kids See Ghosts, and they released their self-titled debut . And earlier this week, we learned the details on Kids See Ghosts’ first-ever advertised live show. West and Cudi have shared plenty of stages over the years, but this fall, they’ll headline Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles, playing the first fully billed Kids See Ghosts show. And at a secret show last night, they gave some indication of what that show might look like. As Pitchfork points out, West and Cudi popped onstage to do a quick set at the Los Angeles nightclub Los Candiles last night. They performed West’s Ye “Ghost Town,” West’s first time doing it onstage, and they also ran back the older West tracks “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1.” They looked happy. Sadly, shaky cell-phone footage, much if which appears to come from Kendall Jenner’s Instagram story, is the only e...

Iggy Pop Recreates Andy Warhol In Death Valley Girls Video: Watch

Hình ảnh
Iggy Pop appears in the music video for Death Valley Girls’ “Disaster (Is What We’re After),” the first single from the Los Angeles band’s upcoming new album Darkness Rains . The video is a recreation of the short film of Andy Warhol eating a hamburger. It was directed by Kansas Bowling. “We’re strong believers in opti-mysticism and connecting with people through rock n’ roll,” the band said in a statement. “Having Iggy dig our music was more than amazing for us. When Kansas told us she had a dream about recreating the ‘Andy Warhol Eating a Hamburger’ short film but with Iggy starring for our music video, we were cautiously excited about the possibility. Next thing we know we’re in Miami with Iggy himself, and a rock n’ roll dream became reality!” Iggy has a history of supporting younger artists: Just a couple months ago , he declared Mitski “the most advanced American songwriter that I know” during his BBC 6 radio show, where he often plays new music. The Spirit Of The Beehive – “d.o.u.b.l.e.u.r.o.n.g.” Video

Last month, the Spirit Of The Beehive announced their forthcoming album Hypnic Jerks with the release of lead single “ can i receive the contact? ” Today we’re getting the second single “d.o.u.b.l.e.u.r.o.n.g.” and its music video. The first minute and a half of the track is a voice recording of an old man talking about his grandchildren and birdcages. Then the Philadelphia psych-rockers fall into their usual blend of dreamy aggression. The lyrics loom with an inescapable sadness: “I’m in someone else’s head that’s why it’s wrong/ I’m saying things all wrong/ I’m doing things so wrong/ Now everything is wrong.” And the video patches together vintage home videos of family trips and kids running through backyards and bikes with training wheels. In the interims, the band sits solemnly against a brick wall. Watch and listen below. Hypnic Jerks  is out 9/14 via Tiny Engines. Dru Hill Member Smoke E. Digglera Explains Photoshopped Sneakers

’90s R&B group Dru Hill recruited Smoke E. Digglera — former lead singer for Playa — to their lineup this year, joining current members Tamir “Nokio” Ruffin, Mark “Sisqó” Andrews, Antwuan “Tao” Simpson, and Benjamin “Black” Bush. While their musical stylings may be in sync, their footwear coordination could use some work. Photos from a recent shoot show a pair of white Air Jordan 1 sneakers poorly-photoshopped onto Smoke’s feet. Smoke told TMZ that he thought they were shooting from the waist up, so he decided to stay comfortable in his slides. He explained the incident after fans called out the flub on Twitter: “Our director of digital media did not get that memo, felt as if the slides were a flaw, tried to fix them, and put them ugly ass 1s on me, as you called them,” he tells TMZ . Apparently, people pay more attention to his feet now. Watch the full video below. WHAT ARE THOSE?! pic.twitter.com/7JxQSaRt4V — Larry Bridges Jr. (@larrybridges_jr) August 10, 2018 قالب ورد...

The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

Aphex Twin came back with a new song and video this week, and that’s great. But the video turns out to be a glitchy mapped-out computer-brain thing, and it doesn’t have any terrifying scenes of anyone wearing a creepy Richard D. James face, so it’s not on this list. Instead, this week’s picks are below. 5. Drake – “In My Feelings” (Dir. Karena Evans) It’s the weakest of this year’s Drake Video Events, and yet it’s still a lot of fun, mostly because of Drake’s performatively bemused reaction to the dance craze that he didn’t mean to help start. 4. Travis Scott – “Stop Trying To Be God” (Feat. James Blake) (Dir. Dave Meyers) I wasn’t sure about this one until Travis Scott was riding on a fire-breathing flying sheep as it destroyed a city. Then, I was sure. 3. Tyler, The Creator – “See You Again” (Feat. Kanli Uchis) (Dir. Wolf Haley) This one is perhaps best enjoyed if you think of it as Tyler doing his version of the first 15 minutes of The Master . I also like that he still ...
